Cultural mediation translates the contents and themes of the institutions into the present. It establishes a connection between the artistic, historical or scientific questions and themes of the house that moves our society now.
This currentness supports the relevance of museums in our midst on a high level. We are eager to make our audience curious, inspire, get inspired and entertain. Their experiences in our houses should accompany them when they are back at home, at work, school or when they tell friends about it. Cultural mediation can create exactly this fascination.
Often, these energetic projects, mediations and implementations fizzle out after a short shooting star. Other disciplines in the museum field are more experienced in documenting and publishing their findings and results. Cultural mediators mostly write only brief project or annual reports and share these findings hardly in the professional group on a regular basis. This causes expertise and knowledge to disappear silently.
We can do better than that! For the further development of the profession, it is important to share and spread our knowledge and skills. Both young professionals and experts benefit from networking and documentation. To achieve funding, staff and budget for future projects, a long-term, thorough documentation is essential. It is important to serve different channels and media for the respective stakeholders – practical reports, theories and developments within the profession of cultural mediation, documentation and strategies for sponsors, society-relevant topics of the institution for the public...
Therefore we are all urged to sustain our developments in projects, strategies, organization and programs and share them in our networks. Annual reports, blog posts, articles, publications, videos, social media channels, meetings and conferences are just a few of the ways to carry out our cultural mediation expertise. In this way, we all actively support the establishment of the job description for cultural mediation.
In this sense, ICOM CECA Austria will create a new project sheet and regularly launch a call for papers among colleagues on selected topics and share them on the website and channels. We look forward to numerous submissions, and the steady growth and sharing of our work.
